DACC event to provide mental health resources

Commercial-News - 5/4/2019

May 04-- May 4--DANVILLE -- Danville Area Community College's Diversity Team will offer a free event next week to highlight Mental Health Awareness Month.

The event will take place from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday, in the Bremer Conference Center on DACC's campus. It is open to the public.

"For years we've wanted to do something like this," Dawn Nasser, coordinator of DACC's Campus & Community Resources and a Diversity Team co-chair, said. "We're very excited about it."

Suzanna Aguirre, an administrative assistant for DACC's Liberal Arts Division and a Diversity Team co-chair, agreed. "A couple of agencies -- the VA and Rosecrance -- were wanting to do something because there is a need for it in the community."

Representatives from eight community agencies will be on hand at the event to speak about their mental health services and how they can help anyone who is having mental health issues.

"We will have a panel of representatives that will talk about the services they offer," Nasser said.

Dr. Christopher J. Dull, a psychiatrist from Zionsville, Ind., will be the keynote speaker at the event before the panel talk begins around 2:30 p.m.

This event is an opportunity for the community and DACC students, faculty and staff to become aware of everything Danville has to offer for individuals in need.

"Our psychology and healthcare students also can come and learn about how to deal with clients and get them to the right resources," Nasser said.

According to Nasser, the Diversity Team thought the event would be a good tie-in with the recent Danville Light Opera musical theater production on "Next to Normal," which dealt with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

Refreshments will be served by DACC's Culinary Arts Department during the last hour or so of the event, Nasser said.

Danville Area Community College's Diversity Team is sponsoring a Mental Health Awareness event from 2-5 p.m. Tuesday, May 7, in the Bremer Conference Center on DACC's campus. It is open to the public. For more information about the event, contact Suzanna Aguirre at 443-8724 or
